Facebook takes aim at TikTok by letting users earn money off minute-long videos

Facebook takes aim at TikTok by letting users earn money off minute-long videos

Facebook announced plans to help creators further monetize their content on Thursday

The product update allows creators to earn money off minute-long videos and live stream events, as well as opening up ad opportunities for more users.

Facebook's update could be an attempt to compete with TikTok on short form videos. Yoav Arnstein, Facebook's director of app monetization, said the company is looking to further empower creators that generate short-form and live videos.

The social-media company's new ad program gives Facebook creators an easier way to generate money off their videos and makes the app more competitive with the revenue creators can generate on TikTok.

On TikTok, influencers can monetize their views through the app's Creator's Fund. Members of the fund must have at least 10,000 followers and views within 30 days of applying. Through the program, influencers generate about 2-4 cents per 1,000 views, according to the media site Tubefilter Most TikTokers with enough views or followers to generate paying opportunities make a majority of their money off brand deals, which generate between $200 to $20,000, Tubefilter reports

Facebook's ad campaigns generate an average of $8.75 per 1,000 views, according to the social media exminer Tubefilter found Facebook creator revenue fluctuated in 2020, with some influencers generating millions of dollars off the site, while others with millions of views received little to no pay out.

Brentford stun Arsenal 2-0 to make dream start in Premier League

Brentford stun Arsenal 2-0 to make dream start in Premier League

Brentford marked their first game in the top flight for 74 years and their first in front of fans at their new stadium with an emotional 2-0 victory over a ragged Arsenal. Sergi Canos and Christian Norgaard scored for the newly-promoted side

HIGHLIGHTS
  1. Brentford register their first top flight win since 1947
  2. Dream start for newcomer Brentford as they stun Arsenal 2-0
  3. Sergi Canos and Christian Noergaard scored the goals for Brentford
  4. Brentford made a dream Premier League debut by stunning Arsenal 2-0, in their first game in the top flight for 74 years and their first in front of fans at their new stadium, on Friday.

Sergi Canos put Brentford ahead in the 22nd minute and Christian Noergaard headed in the second in the 73rd after Arsenal failed to deal with a long throw-in, handing the promoted club a perfect start to life in the Premier League in front of nearly 16,500 fans at the Community Stadium.

The win was well deserved as Brentford, revelling in their chance to take on the big boys, took the game to an Arsenal team who looked disjointed and toothless in the absence of "unwell" strike duo Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette

In a satisfying symmetry, the teams’ last meeting was a 1-0 win for Arsenal at the old Griffin Park in May 1947, Brentford’s last game in the old first division as they were relegated never expecting it would take them 74 years to get back.

It has been a tough road too, with a record nine playoff failures before they finally triumphed last season.

For Mikel Arteta's Arsenal, it was another disappointing performance and a worrying start. The team only finished eighth last season and showed little sign of having sorted out its previous problems.

Brentford's opener came after right-back Calum Chambers hacked the ball off the byline, only for it to come back via Ethan Pinnock to Canos, who cut inside the defender and buried a low shot inside Bernd Leno’s near post.

For the second goal, Arsenal's defenders allowed a long throw from Mads Bech Sorensen to bounce in the six-yard box and Norgaard arrived at the far post to head into an empty net.

Arsenal's academy striker Folarin Balogun was handed his first Premier League start but was taken off before the hour mark. He was replaced by Bukayo Saka, who was given a standing ovation from the Brentford fans after being subjected to racist abuse following his penalty miss for England in the European Championship final loss to Italy.

Rahul Gandhi s Twitter handle unlocked a week after suspended for posting pics of rape victims family

Congress leader Rahul Gandhis Twitter handle was restored on Saturday a week after it was temporarily suspended over a tweet where he published pictures of the family of a nine-year-old victim of alleged rape and murder in Northwest Delhi

week after temporarily suspending his account Twitter restored Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's handle Saturday but not before the principal opposition party accused it of bias

Twitter deemed it violation of its rules.

Sources said the Twitter accounts of some of the party leaders who had shared the same pictures have also been restored.

"Rahul Gandhi's Twitter account has been unlocked," a party functionary said, adding the accounts of some of the leaders have also been restored.

The former Congress chief had made a strong outburst on Friday accusing Twitter of "interfering in the national political process" and said shutting down of his handle amounted to an "attack on the country's democratic structure".

Gandhi, in a YouTube video statement titled "Twitter's dangerous game", alleged that it was not a neutral and objective platform and was "beholden to the government.

West Bengal Higher Secondary Education Chief Sacked For Class 12 Exam

West Bengal Higher Secondary Education Chief Sacked For Class 12 Exam

Students who had failed had blocked roads and gheraoed teachers for several days demanding that they, too, be declared passed

Kolkata= The West Bengal government today removed Ms Mahua Das from the post of president of the state higher secondary education council, less than a month after she highlighted the religion of the topper while declaring the results and after the students who failed to make the grade went on a rampage across the state till the board eventually gave all of them pass marks.
The twin controversies erupted on July 22.
While declaring the results, Ms Das had repeatedly mentioned the religion of the topper, saying this was the first time a Muslim girl had secured the top spot with 499 marks out of 500, or 99.8 per cent.

Even as that controversy snowballed, 18,000 odd students who failed to make the passing grade went on a rampage, vandalising schools, blocking roads, and gheraoing teacher in protest across West Bengal.

They pointed that higher secondary exams were not held at all and that students were evaluated on the basis of the Class X board exam results, Class XI exam results, and projects and practical tests in class XII. If 97.53 per cent of the 8,19,202 students enrolled in Class 12 could pass the high secondary exam without actually writing an exam due to prevailing pandemic conditions, why couldn't they, the protesting students asked..

The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) President said no merit list was to be released this year as the results were based on alternative assessment, the "40:60 formula".

Forty per cent weightage was given, according to this formula, to the best of four subjects in the Class 10 exam held in 2019. Sixty per cent went to the annual Class 11 theory exam held in 2020, along with the Class 12 practical exam or projects, for science and arts respectively.

"All these students...had either fared very poorly in their Class 11 annual exams or failed in practicals or projects in Class 12 and, hence, were declared unsuccessful in the evaluation criteria," Ms Das said.

Nevertheless, the protest prompted the state government to ask the Council to review the results.

'Faced Harassment 50 Years Ago, But Now...': Cyrus Poonawalla's Praise For PM Modi
Licence raj has also come down, Serum Institute of India Chairman Dr Cyrus Poonawalla said. (File).

Pune=Recalling how the industry used to face ;hardship'" in securing permissions and "harassment from bureaucrats" 50 years ago, chairman of the city-based vaccine maker Serum Institute of India (SII), Dr Cyrus Poonawalla, on Friday hailed the Modi government saying that red-tapism and licence raj have come down under its rule.

He also said that in the past, he had to "fall at the feet" of bureaucrats and drug controllers in order to get permissions, and added that the situation has changed now, which resulted in quick launch of SII's covid-19 vaccine  covishield.

Mr Poonawalla was speaking at the event where he received the Lokmanyat Tilak National Award instituted by the Lokmanya Tilak Trust.

"Serum Institute was founded in 1966 the morning after my marriage with Villoo, my dear late wife, to whom I dedicate this award. Fifty years ago, the industry had to face hardships in getting basic facilities like power, water, in getting permissions from bureaucrats. It had to face harassment from bureaucrats...I was not supposed to say this," he said.

"Transport and communication were also great problems and challenges that were faced by my staff and fellow directors...It was a long journey and a very painful one, which has now become very rewarding. I had to fall at the feet of bureaucrats and drug controllers, etc, to get permissions. But I must stress that difficulties, red tape are much reduced now under the Modi government," he said.

Licence raj has also come down, which has resulted in quick launch of the coronavirus vaccine, Mr Poonawalla said.

"Certainly, one of the major reasons why we could launch our vaccine so quickly was forthcoming grant or permission, encouragement to industries as the licence raj has come down considerably. We have got a drug controller, which responds in the evening even after the office hours. There is no need for ''maska polish'' now," he said.

Taking about the award, he said that he values it a lot although he had been honoured in America, UK and various other countries in the past.

Speaking on the occasion,[ Deepak Tilak], president of the[ Lokmanya Tilak ]Trust, said, "In unstable and challenging conditions, SII took immense efforts to develop an indigenous vaccine, which mitigated panic associated with COVID-19. This is the result of the effort and solid support of Dr Cyrus Poonawalla to his team."

Former Union minister and senior Congress leader Sushil Kumar Shinde also lauded Mr Poonawalla for his work and said that with the SII vaccine was saving lakhs of lives.
